The leaf collection program runs from mid-October through late November and all available personnel are dedicated to the program during this time period.
Snow removal and ice control work is handled in house primarily by the Street Division with the assistance of the Water Division, Wastewater Division, and Engineering Department. Plow operators use best efforts to ensure that main roads are open during the snowfall event, and then turn to secondary streets. City-owned parking lots are cleared and/or salted and downtown sidewalks are done, as well.
The Street Division spends a substantial amount of time dealing with weather-related emergencies such as snow storms, ice storms, wind storms, and flooding. During the last couple of years, we experienced a record-breaking number of snow events. In 2007-2008, crews had to respond to 30+ events that resulted in over 50 inches of snow during the winter season. Precipitation during the 2008 calendar year was the most ever recorded.
Routine maintenance is handled during periods when there are no weather-related responsibilities. Winter jobs include tree trimming of 1,000+ trees per year of the city’s inventory of 10,000+ parkway trees, and cleaning of 500-1,000 catch basins is done annually. One mechanic maintains the fleet of Public Works heavy equipment including large dump trucks, tractors, pickups, cars, and machinery. The Street Division has a sign shop that creates, maintains, and installs signs throughout the city.
The Street Division is the caretaker of all public properties within the city limits including detention areas, ponds, city-owned land, and city-owned parking lots, and oversees nearly 100 contractually-mowed sites.
The Street Division operates 2 municipal cemeteries and is contacted by area funeral homes to make arrangements for grave openings and burials.
Street Division personnel assist with special events throughout the year such as the Batavia Triathlon, Windmill City Days, Art in your Eye, and Kane County Electronic Recycling Drop Offs.
