Reconstructing the Farnsworth Avenue Interchange Bridge

The Illinois Tollway is reconstructing the Farnsworth Avenue Interchange Bridge at the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) in Aurora, including rebuilding the bridge and making interchange ramp improvements.  Work on the Farnsworth Avenue Interchange is beginning this month and is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2017.   Construction in 2016 will include removal and reconstruction of the northbound side of the bridge and removal of two ramps carrying traffic from eastbound I-88 to northbound Farnsworth Avenue from northbound Farnsworth Avenue to westbound I-88.  In order to complete this project safely and in a timely manner, lane closures and traffic detours will be put in place throughout the project.  For more information on this project visit the City’s website.

Good News on the Siemens Front

Siemens now has their approvals from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and the US EPA to begin site cleanup on the property at the southwest corner of McKee Street and VanNortwick Avenue.  Siemens will shortly be hiring a contractor to do the cleanup activities and work is expected to begin in the next month or so.  The site will have the contaminated soil material hauled off the site and disposed of in an approved special disposal facility.  They will also be treating a groundwater well in the center of the site.  This small amount of groundwater will be treated so it can meet residential development requirements; it already meets standards for non-residential development.  This groundwater has been confined to the middle of the site and poses no hazard to surrounding properties or the local aquifer.

Siemens will also be doing some additional testing on property north of McKee and in the parking lot to the west to ensure there are no other contaminated materials in those areas.  If they are found, those materials will be removed at the same time.  The McKee parking lot will also be posted for “No Parking” at that time as this is not intended for parking by the general public.
The site will then be filled with clean fill in stages, leveled off with topsoil and then seeded.  Drainage away from the existing industrial properties along Wilson will be maintained during the excavation and fill process.  Once the site is stabilized, the perimeter fence will be removed.  All of this work is planned to be complete by fall of 2016.
After the property is fully cleaned, the property will be listed for sale for future development.  The site is planned and zoned for Mixed Use development, and would no longer be used for industrial purposes.  Any questions can be directed to the Community Development Department at 630-454-2700.

Deerpath Road Bridge

Weekly updated information will be available on the project website:  or

Construction for replacement of the bridge is underway.  The contractor has displayed two changeable message boards on Main Street prior to reaching Deerpath Road that the road is closed and to alert drivers to follow the posted detour route.  A few more utilities are being relocated prior to the bridge construction fully starting.  The road closure will be for the duration of the project and as of now we are anticipating the road being closed until September 2016.  This is weather pending as well as dependent on the utility contractors.
The City appreciates your cooperation during this project. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the Public Works Engineering project manager, Andrea Podraza either via or (630) 454-2757.
