ELECTRONICS & BOOKS RECYCLING EVENT IN ST. CHARLES ON SATURDAY, MAY 12

Kane County Recycles is hosting a recycling event for electronics and books on Saturday, May 12, 2018. This event will take place between 8 a.m. and 12 noon at the Kane County Branch Court office at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles,  just north of Route 38 and south of Route 64 across from the County Fairgrounds.

Wait time will be no more than 10 minutes at a maximum and more likely less than 5 minutes. This event is for electronics and books only. It will NOT include document shredding or paint. The next shredding event will be on July 14. Electronics collection will include computers, laptops, stereos, DVD players, printers, keyboards, mice, phones, electronic games, holiday light strings and more, all of which can be recycled at no charge.

BOOKS TOO

Books are also free to drop off. TVs (of any size, and any age) and computer monitors will also be collected, but they have a cost. The cost for recycling television sets and computer monitors, measured diagonally is $25 for screens under 21 inches, and $35 for screens 21 inches and over. You can pay onsite with cash or card.

Electronics are collected and recycled by eWorks Electronics Services, a non-profit whose mission is to employ individuals with developmental disabilities to sort and disassemble the electronic equipment. Your payment for TVs and monitors goes directly to them and helps fund that work. Books of any age or condition, and both hardcover and paperback, are collected, sorted and redistributed by Pacesetter Books, a church-based non-profit that assesses books for reusability and recycles those that cannot be redistributed.

Kane County also has 2 Electronics Recycling Drop-off locations that are open Monday through Friday every week, except for holidays. They will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. Kane County Recycles has posted a full schedule of collection events for 2018, which includes the July 14 Recycling Extravaganza event. Here are the poster and map for that event. Questions may be directed to Kane County Recycling Coordinator, Jennifer Jarland at  630-208-3841, recycle@countyofkane.org

This weekend! 25th Anniversary Batavia Citywide Garage Sale to benefit Batavia Fireworks fund

Get ready for our 25th Annual City-Wide Garage Sale!

Friday, May 4th & Saturday, May 5th – 8am-4pm.

The City-Wide Garage Sale is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and it will be our biggest one yet. What once started with 25 sales has now blossomed into a yearly tradition where the residents of Batavia come together to Spring clean and sell their stuff on the first weekend in May. This fundraiser is one of the biggest events that the volunteers of the Batavia Fireworks Committee host each year to help raise the funds to put on Batavia’s 4th of July Sky Concert in Engstrom Park. In honor of this tradition and its 25 years of success, we are hoping for a record garage sale year. Our goal is to have at least 250 garage and/or yard sales registered for this unique Batavia event.

Hosting a garage/yard sale:

  • Register by April 25th, 2018 at 5pm online at www.BataviaFireworks.org and pay the $35 registration fee. All proceeds go to the Batavia Fireworks Fund. Printed registrations will be available in your City Utility Bill, Neighbors Magazine, and can be downloaded from our website.
    • Sales must be held within the City of Batavia and/or within the Batavia Township limits.
    • Registration guarantees that your sale will be listed on our printed maps that are distributed to thousands of potential shoppers as well as on our online map on our website.
    • We are giving away two (2) Google Home devices. One (1) device per each side of the river. Drawing will be held on May 5th, 2018. Must be a registered sale to win.
    • The Batavia Fireworks Committee advertises this event in all the local newspapers, city calendars, multiple social media outlets, and on Craigslist.
  • Pick up your Sale Packet from City Hall (100 N. Island Ave., Batavia, IL 60510) on May 2nd, 2018 from noon-7pm. Packet includes copies of the Garage Sale Map, signs, balloons, and flowers donated by Shady Hill Gardens in Elburn. (www.shadyhill.com)
  • Host your sale on May 4th & 5th, 2018.

Garage Sale Shoppers:
Printed maps will be available after May 2nd, 2018 at City Hall and other establishments around town. You can visit our website to see a list of providers. There will also be a digital map of all the sales that you can use on your cell phone on the days of the sales.
Registration deadline is April 25th, 2018 by 5:00pm.
