Slow down campaign sign

Slow Down Campaign Kicks off August 15 in Batavia

Batavia residents can encourage speed awareness on our streets by picking up a Please Slow Down sign and posting it on their personal property from August 15 through September 1, 2018.

Signs can be picked up at Batavia City Hall, the Rosalie Jones Adminstration Center on Wilson (Batavia School District), Batavia Park District offices on Wilson Street one block west of Route 31, and at the Batavia Public Library.

You can pick up your sign right away at any of these locations. Please read the instructions below for legal display of your SLOW DOWN sign.

Thank you for participating in the “Slow Down” campaign aimed at getting the attention of drivers to slow their speed when driving through our neighborhoods.

Here are a few guidelines to help make the most of this campaign:

The signs provided are meant to be posted for a limited duration. Studies show that people tend to notice things that are “new” and ignore them at some point as they become a familiar sight. Therefore, this initial campaign will run from August 1, 2018 to September 7, 2018.

Please post the signs on your property, not in your parkway. Signs in the parkway reduce driver visibility and that’s the last thing we would want with a campaign aimed at improving safety.General rules for parkway posting are 13' back from a street with sidewalks and 19' feet back on a street without sidewalks.

If the initial campaign is deemed a success, we plan to repeat it in the future. Therefore, you may keep your sign at the end of the campaign period or you may return it to one of these distribution sites:

City of Batavia Police Department
100 N. Island Avenue

Batavia School District Offices
335 W. Wilson Street

If you have any questions about the Slow Down campaign you may call (630)454-2000.
We would like to hear your feedback about the effectiveness of the campaign. Please let us know what you think:

Home Rule Info

Home Rule Information

A petition has been filed with the City Clerk to put the following question on the November 6, 2018 ballot:
“Shall the City of Batavia cease to be a home rule unit?”
The City may not use public resources either to advocate for or against this proposition, but we want to make every effort to provide voters with factual information so that they may make an informed decision.

For that purpose, the City has created a page on its website where residents can find helpful information for education about what home rule allows and also the limits of home rule authority. The City intends to add to these educational materials on an ongoing basis and to hold meetings to respond to any questions that you may have about home rule.

morton street map

Area 3 Construction ongoing

The week of August 13th Copenhaver Construction will finish up water services connections to the new main and work on installing the large diameter storm sewer on the north side of Morton.  Curb and concrete driveway aprons will be poured and require residents to be parked on the street until the concrete cures.  Morton Street continues to be shut down from Rt. 31 west to Jefferson to thru traffic.  Local Traffic will only be able to access Morton Street from Jefferson.  This closure will be for the duration of the project which is anticipated to be completed on August 31st.  Please follow the detour routes and proceed with caution in the construction zone.

Currently all traffic has shifted to the northbound lanes and will remain in place until the week July 30th where traffic will be shifted back to the southbound lanes to finish utility installations, which require Rt 31/Batavia Avenue lane closures.  Lane closures started the week of June 11on Rt. 31, reducing north and south to one lane in each direction.  Residents and motorists are advised to reduce speeds and expect delays as they travel through the lane closures on Rt 31/Batavia Avenue.  For more information on the project go the project website
