Home Rule Info

Home Rule Information

A petition has been filed with the City Clerk to put the following question on the November 6, 2018 ballot:
“Shall the City of Batavia cease to be a home rule unit?”
The City may not use public resources either to advocate for or against this proposition, but we want to make every effort to provide voters with factual information so that they may make an informed decision.

For that purpose, the City has created a page on its website where residents can find helpful information for education about what home rule allows and also the limits of home rule authority. The City intends to add to these educational materials on an ongoing basis and to hold meetings to respond to any questions that you may have about home rule.

Slow Down sign

Join the Slow Down Campaign:
new shipment of signs available Monday, August 20

Batavia residents can encourage speed awareness on our streets by picking up a Please Slow Down sign and posting it on their personal property from August 15 through September 7, 2018.

Signs can still be picked up at Batavia City Hall.

Please read the instructions below for legal display of your SLOW DOWN sign.

Thank you for participating in the “Slow Down” campaign aimed at getting the attention of drivers to slow their speed when driving through our neighborhoods.

Here are a few guidelines to help make the most of this campaign:

The signs provided are meant to be posted for a limited duration. Studies show that people tend to notice things that are “new” and ignore them at some point as they become a familiar sight. Therefore, this initial campaign will run from August 1, 2018 to September 7, 2018.

Please post the signs on your property, not in your parkway. Signs in the parkway reduce driver visibility and that’s the last thing we would want with a campaign aimed at improving safety.General rules for parkway posting are 13' back from a street with sidewalks and 19' feet back on a street without sidewalks.

If the initial campaign is deemed a success, we plan to repeat it in the future. Therefore, you may keep your sign at the end of the campaign period or you may return it to one of these distribution sites:

City of Batavia Police Department
100 N. Island Avenue

Batavia School District Offices
335 W. Wilson Street

If you have any questions about the Slow Down campaign you may call (630)454-2000. We would like to hear your feedback about the effectiveness of the campaign. Please let us know what you think:
