Home Rule Info

Home Rule Information

A petition has been filed with the City Clerk to put the following question on the November 6, 2018 ballot:
“Shall the City of Batavia cease to be a home rule unit?”
The City may not use public resources either to advocate for or against this proposition, but we want to make every effort to provide voters with factual information so that they may make an informed decision.

#cityofbataviail

For that purpose, the City has created a page on its website where residents can find helpful information for education about what home rule allows and also the limits of home rule authority. The City intends to add to these educational materials on an ongoing basis and to hold meetings to respond to any questions that you may have about home rule.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATES

Aerial of batavia

College and Wilson Street Drainage Improvements

We are nearing the end of the underground work. The contractor is currently working on the most difficult part of the project at the intersection of Cleveland and College, so the progress there is more methodical. After the underground work is completed next week the contractor will then begin patching the curbs and road, starting on Forest.

No on-street parking will be allowed in the construction area and there may be times when the roads will be closed to thru traffic. Construction equipment staged on the street will be barricaded off every night. In addition, some material will be staged in the parkways.  More information on this project can be found on the project webpage at https://www.cityofbatavia.net/682/College-and-Wilson-Street-Drainage-Impro.

2018 Ward 1 Storm Sewer Construction Update

For the week beginning Monday September 17, Performance Construction and Geneva Construction, will be installing concrete curb and gutter along Giese Road. Sidewalk construction will be ongoing during the week. Please be aware that some of the driveways along Giese Road will be impacted by the concrete work so some residents will lose access to driveways. If so you will receive a door hanger letting you know when you will lose access.

No on-street parking will be allowed in the construction area and at times Giese Road will be closed to thru traffic only starting at Larkspur. Construction equipment staged on the street will be barricaded off every night. In addition, some material will be staged in the parkway of the north side of Giese Road.  More information on this project can be found on the project webpage at http://www.cityofbatavia.net/655/Ward-I.

Opportunities to engage in environmental projects

Students and adult volunteers will be combining efforts to improve the environmental quality of local woodlands and the natural areas restoration on the high school campus. Here are the upcoming dates.

Batavia Fabyan Woods project

Fabyan Woods Batavia Restoration

Upcoming Workdays:
Sunday, September 16, 9am-12noon
Sunday, October 21, 9am-12noon

  • The goal of the environmental stewardship workdays is to remove invasive species so that native plants may again flourish below the majestic oaks on this site and open up a breathtaking view of our beautiful Fox River. Restoring this site can help control area flooding by helping to filter and retain water, will eliminate habitat that hosts harmful tick and mosquito populations, and will increase animal and plant biodiversity for a more healthy landscape.
  • Anyone is welcome to join our crew, young or old, and no experience is required. There is something for every ability level from picking up trash, pulling invasive garlic mustard, carrying cut branches, lopping small branches, to cutting down trees.
  • SUGGESTED ATTIRE. Long pants, closed toed shoes (preferably boots), work gloves, safety glasses, long sleeves, bug spray. We have extra work gloves and safety glasses if you forget yours. We also provide tools, snacks, and water.
  • Parking can be accessed from the windmill parking lot (off Route 25 just north of Fabyan Pkwy), then by foot head south (along the east bank) on the Fox River Trail along the river until just after you pass under the Fabyan Bridge. Anna will meet people at the windmill parking lot at 9am and will walk together to site.

BHS natural area project

Batavia High School Restoration Project Work Day

Sunday, Sept 23, 1-3pm

  • The goal of this project is to restore a storm water retention pond at Batavia High School. Teachers, Dan Renz and Donna Detrick, along with their Environmental Science students will be working over the next few years to restore the landscape on the north side of campus.
  • Students will establish a buffer zone to slow infiltration to the site, remove invasive species, and learn to plant and care for native species. The restored pond will help filter and improve water quality, provide habitat for wildlife, require less chemical control, and serve as an environmental education site for students.
  • We will be working on watering and wrapping up projects from the student plantings and trail work to make the area look nice.
  • Please wear old clothes a pair of work gloves and feel free to bring your gardening tools like water cans, shovels, pruners, diggers, and buckets. We will be meeting on the Northeast side of BHS off Wilson Street near the service drive. We look forward to seeing you and thank you for you help and patience during the transition of planting.
  • You can also donate money for native plants here: https://bit.ly/2KUTMgV
