Household Hazardous Waste Front Door Collection Service

The City of Batavia now offers a new Household Hazardous Waste collection service to its residents.  The City’s third-party provider, U.S. Ecology, will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection.  For contact information and to learn about the items that will be accepted, please visit the City’s website

Are You Recycling Right?

As you may have heard, residential recycling is more highly contaminated with non-recyclable garbage than ever before. Reports from sorting facilities range from 25% to 35% contamination in their recycling materials. This weighs down sorting facilities, reduces commodity prices, affects the remanufacturing markets, and increases costs for local governments and ultimately residents.
To address the increase in recycling contamination, a state task force was formed to bring recycling industry haulers and sorting facility operators together with governmental and organizational educators to develop simple cohesive recycling education materials to help residents better understand what items should and should not be placed in recycling carts.
These guidelines represent the common items accepted in most recycling programs throughout Illinois, and the goal is to have them be the go-to guidelines for all programs, all haulers, and all educators throughout the state.  An interactive Curbside Recycling Guide has been created by the Illinois EPA to help residents learn what to put in their curbside recycling bin, what to keep out, and ask questions.  Kane County Recycles has also created a quick reference sheet of guidelines to help residents.

Save the Date for Green Night Out at the Movies: The True Cost of Clothing

Save the Date for Green Night Out at the Movies!
The Batavia Environmental Commission invites the community to Green Night Out at the Movies featuring “The True Cost” on March 9, 2019 at 7pm in City Hall.
The True Cost is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?

Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye-opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

For more information about this film and to watch the trailer click here
We are also looking for sponsors and exhibitors at the event.  If you are interested - click Here to register online.  Deadline for registration and payments is Friday, February 1, 2019.  For more information contact Carolyn Burnham - or 630-441-3403
