Businesses Open During Construction
Please remember that no businesses are closed due to the Houston Street Project.  The Popcorn Depot, Open Range, Depot Museum, the Professional Building and all the businesses on Island Avenue are all easily accessible at all times, though you may find yourself waling just a bit further for a parking space. Please cross your fingers for continued good work weather.

Houston Street Update

The following is a status update and work scheduled for the week of October 5:

  • Thorne Electric has completed all the installation of conduits for the street lighting.  They have also installed most of the receptacles in the islands.  Thorne will return to install the street light foundations once the mainline curbs are completed.
  • The pavement in the Island Avenue intersection was removed today, and the removal of the asphalt in the Water/Houston intersection is going to be done Friday, October 2.  The grading of aggregate will be completed this Saturday in preparation for the curb installation to follow.
  • On Monday, October 5, Geneva Construction will be on site to install binder ramps at each end of the excavated areas on Water Street and Island Avenue because the stone ramps simply will not last too long.
  • Abbey Paving will be installing the roadway curbs the week of October 5.  The first step is to install string line for the curb machine, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday with the final grading work being done by the curb machine Tuesday.  At this point, the installation of the curb is set for Wednesday, October 7, with all the small sections of curb around structures and at driveways to be done Thursday, October 8.
  • Geneva Construction is tentatively scheduled to install asphalt binder on October 14, and Thorne Electric is coming back a couple days later to start the street light foundations.

Parking Lot at Southeast Corner of IL. Rt. 25 & Wilson Street (AKA Art Stop Parking Lot)
The City of Batavia has hired Geneva Construction to improve the existing parking lot at the southeast corner of IL Rt. 25 (South River Road) & Wilson Street, which is also known as the Art Stop.  Currently access to the lot is granted from IL Rt. 25 and that will remain unchanged.  The parking lot has 17 spaces in its current configuration and with the proposed improvement the parking lot will be enlarged and reconfigured to add an additional 24 parking spaces.

Construction is anticipated to begin the week of September 28th with setting up erosion control measures, traffic control and removing trees.  The construction will also include replacement of a storm structure in the northbound lane of Rt. 25 just south of the entrance of the existing parking lot.  Due to the nature of this work it will require traffic control to close one of the travel lanes and have traffic directed by a flagger.  During this work anticipate traffic back-ups in the surrounding area and possibly choose alternate routes of travel.  In addition storm sewer will be added, the retaining wall adjacent to the sidewalk on Rt. 25 removed, and squares of sidewalk will be replaced all within the public Right-of-Way, all completed within a day.  Please proceed through this area with caution.

For additional information regarding the construction schedule of this project please follow the City on Facebook and sign up for weekly E-blasts.  The project is expected to be completed by the beginning of November. If you have not signed up for E-Blasts yet you can do so by going to the City’s webpage,, and in the middle of the page there is a section to manage your notifications and sign up, ENews & Notify Me.  This will allow you to control what type of information gets sent to your inbox.  If you have any additional questions or concerns I can be reached at or (630) 454-2757.
