Mosquito Abatement Program

The City of Batavia and its private contractor provide a comprehensive Mosquito Abatement Program designed primarily to prevent mosquito larvae from hatching into adult mosquitoes.  Our contractor monitors/treats known bodies of water, as needed, and also monitors traps at various locations in town.  The City of Batavia’s staff has already completed treatment of all catch basins along the roadways.  Residents are asked to avoid discharging grass clippings into streets and curb lines, as this grass can wash into the sewers and create a perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. Residents are also encouraged to walk around their properties weekly and empty water in old flower pots, wading pools, birdbaths, and other containers to eliminate stagnant water sites.
Even with the efforts being taken, nuisance mosquitoes will continue to hatch.  Residents are advised to take precautionary steps to protect themselves such as using spray and wearing long sleeves/pants at dawn/dusk when mosquitoes are most active.  A city-wide adulticide truck treatment is scheduled to be done prior to the Fourth of July holiday.  To learn more about the program, please visit the City of Batavia program page.   Residents can register to receive a notification by text or email notification in advance of adulticide aerial spraying by going to the Clarke portal.  If you have any questions, please contact the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400.

Do Some Research Before Sealing Your Asphalt Driveway

Is it time seal your asphalt driveway? Do some research and make sure the company doing the work is not using coal-tar based sealants. If you are sealing your driveway yourself, most big box stores no longer sell it, but check the labels before buying.
Before you buy sealcoat or hire anyone to do if for you, ask which type of sealcoat they are using and make sure it is asphalt-based sealcoat

Help Keep Storm Drains Clear

Residents are asked to assist the City by clearing their storm drains of any leaves/buds/flowers/grass that may be covering them. This will help alleviate potential street flooding. Please remember that grass clippings from your mower are not allowed on to the street. Either direct them back into your yard or use a mulching mower.
